I have been disabled since 1993 from a diving accident which left me a C-3 quadriplegic. Paralized from the neck down. A little while after my accident I was placed in a nursing home calle Britthaven. It i located in Charlotte NC. I lived ther for roughly 10 years. While I lived there I was subject to many abuses. I have been thrown around and had my legs banged so hard I delevoped sores. The nurses didn’t take care of the wounds and I developed an infection in wich it spread and required me to loose both of my lregs. The doctors had to amputate both of my legs above my knees. Also while there I was subjected to having to lay in feces and urine for hour which in turn gave me bed sores. I developed stage 4 decubs because they were not maintaing the wounds properly. also while there the nursig assistants would not listen to me when I was trying to explaine to them how to remove me frm my wheelchaire with the Hoyer lift. The ignored me and as a result they would not remove my seatbelt even with my repeated requests and as a reesult i now have a permanantly dislocated left hip. I made numerous compllaints to the state but the state ignored me with every complaint. Thestate would listen to the nursing home facility staff and would not believe anything I said. I would call my ombudsman Linda Miller time and time and time again but her hands were tied as well because the state refused to act upon any of my repeated complaints. I enrolled into CPCC for compter data base management so I could hopefully make enough money to get out on my own. Finally I bought me a web cam and got a close friend to take many pictures of the abuse and how they would leave me. I made yet another complaint after a nurse slpped me because i told her that she had no business being a nurse because she would constantly bring me in the wrong medicine. when the stae came to answer my complaint they as always talkked to the staff first then came in to try and get my story. i expllaind my side then they said that i was lying because the staff tells a whole diferent story. i said fine then, if you don’t nbelieve me then let me give you hard and factual and undenyable evidence. because it was always a he sais they said story and i would lose. so i showed them the pictures of my bed sores and me laying in feces, and urine with old urine stains and new urine on top of the driedd stains. i then showed them the videos that i had taken. it waas then their eyes got really big. i feel at that moment they may have reealized that i had been telling the truth all along but they just didn’t care. well as my understanding after i showed the state my hard evidence they told the nursing home that they had to come up with a plan of action to correct the problems etc. well two day later i had my very first seizure. i don’t now wgedre it came from bvecause i never had one before. i feel the nursing home did something. well a couple of days after being in the hospital the patient liason and a social worker came and gaveme a piecce of papre saying they can no longer thak care of me. it’s so weired after 10 years they take cxare well abused me but only after i complain to the state and they have to fix the problems do the kick me out. not only do they kick me out they put my namr on the black list and no nursing home in NC is willinng to accept me now. my storey continues more frrom living with a friend for a yeatr after that to having to find another nursing home but only with the help of a good frid did i get into one but after she got me aditted two weeeks later they fired her for admitting me. i had problems there as well. It was called the Brian center of Reddman road. it too was locatred in charotte. a month after being in that facility i developed a uti. i was afraid of losing my bed but the administartor assured me and my friend that my bed was fine and still there. the day the hospital was going to releae me the facility called and sid they just gavemy bedd away. as a result of loosing that bed eventhough they never let me doa bed hold i was forced to stay in the hospital for over two straight months. the entire month of November and Decemer. the hospital discharge planner sentmyFL2 to every nursing home and they all rejecteted me. aftyer so many frustrations i caller our new ombudsman Hillary Kaylor. she did research and forced the briancet to take me back. the nursing home had plenty of beds but just refused to take me back. when i got back to the nuraing home i went right back to the exact bed ieft in october. i got inn my wheelchair the followig day and there wetre many beds available even though their excuse was that they had noavailable rooms which was a lie. after being force to stay in the hospital and because the Brian ceter refused to take me back it catsed medicare and mediaid $89,000 from you tax payers because the facility would not take me back. mainnly because i stick up for my rights and i have a mind. i now have been placed o th CAP/DA program which allows me to live inndependanly in my own apartrent. but now CAPS is dropping me because i once again spoke up to them about something they were doing wrong. i had my local hearing but they already had teir mind made up and dropped me so i am taking them to a state hearing but because of some things that they have grosly messed up my attorney got the hearing postponed to gather more information. i can exxplain more if you would like to ask just email me at acoolquad@bellsouth.net or if someone who is on CAPS right now and can gve me some information please contat me.
